Google Real Time Search Results Exclude Google Brand?

December 7, 2009

With much fanfare, Google has launched its version of real time search incorporating Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Blog updates into their search results.

The following video shows how Google answers the “What’s happening right now?” and the “What’s happening nearby?”  questions (please forgive the Slumber Inc. soundtrack).

Entering keywords into Google and selecting Anytime produces an amalgamation of relevant news and web results while selecting Latest often produces a condensed version of the Tweet Stream.

Such doesn’t appear to be the case for one particular brand – Google.

Google Real Time Search Latest

Selecting “Latest” in Google’s real time search for “Google” produces not a list of Tweets containing Google but instead a ho hum list of relatively tame looking mostly Google owned sites.

Purely a coincidence?

Must be a fluke here on my computer.

Surely its one or the other.

Why otherwise would real time searches for Yahoo produce Tweets containing Yahoo but not those searches containing Google?

Does the same thing happen to you when you search for Google in their real time results?

If so, the lack of Tweets about Google in Google’s real time search results must be the result of a bug.

Twitter Research Via #Hashtags

August 1, 2009

Hashtags.org is a great tool for researching trends, tags and people Tweet data on Twitter.

Under Trends, searchers can investigate Twitter updates in four different time categories: Right Now, Today, This Week and This Month.

From a marketers perspective, longer term #Hashtag tweet activity revealed in This Week and This Month data shows which Tweets have sustained the most consistent share of voice on Twitter.

#Hashtags This Month

Sorting Trends by shorter time frames Right now and Today reveal the transitory nature of human attention.

Searching by Tags provides another rich source of Twitter data.

A hashtags search for Top tags produces a list of the most popular tags used on Twitter.

Although the data set collected by Twitter is nowhere near the size Google collects and then make available through it Adwords Keyword Suggestion Tool, Hashtags.org appears to provide a statistically relevant sample of Tweeted keywords occurring @Twitter.

I am looking forward to applying this new found data toward reaching more of the Twitter Audience.

Twitter Debuts New Home Page With Search Box

July 28, 2009

Twitter has modified its home page to include a Twitter search box for web users not already logged into their Twitter account.

New Twitter Home Page

New Twitter Home Page

Twitter search options are prominently featured and include search results by the minute, day and week.

This move was probably necessary on Twitter’s part to generate renewed interest in its service which a handful of people – myself included – believe has already peaked.

If Twitter has any one core differentiator for potential non tech users, its would be Twitter’s real time search.

It remains to be seen whether anyone other than tech savvy news hounds have an interest in real time search results.

It will also be interesting to see whether or not Twitter’s search team has addressed the Tweet Stream Pollution issues.

How To Create and Search Your Own Twitter Followers List

July 22, 2009

Yesterday I wrote a post about how to create and search a list of Twitter updates in both WordPress and Google.

Today, I am going to tackle a similar problem: Searching Twitter Followers and Following lists.

Until Twitter makes searching Twitter account followers and following lists part of Twitter search, finding someone who follows you or who is following you isn’t very easy to do.

Creating a searchable list isn’t too dificult it just requires some time.

Go to your Twitter account and click on your followers link and select list view.

This will produce a list of 20 followers per page.

Twitter Followers List

Twitter Followers List

Copy the list of followers from each page.

Depending on how many followers you have will determine how many pages you will have to scroll through and scrape to create your own searchable list.

I have 873 followers at the moment so I had to visit 43 pages to create my list.

Paste the list of followers into a Word document or Excel if you extracted tables and save.

You can now sort either the Word or Excel documents alphabetically to create your first archived list of Followers in a searchable hierarchy.

To archive your Twitter followers list in the cloud, import it into a Google indexed WordPress blog and wallah! – you will have a instant browser searchable WordPress file with a list of all your followers.

After the Googlebot visits your site, your list of followers will also be archived in Google’s search engine results pages.

I have posted my current list of Twitter followers over on TimothyCohn.com

Pirates Pushing Illegal Movie Downloads Via Twitter

July 11, 2009

The Trending Topics feature on Twitter.com still has considerable room for improvement.

Users have gamed Twitter’s search “ranking” system to promote their businesses in Twitter Trending Topics as well as inundate searchers with all sorts of spam from porn to “Get Rich Tweeting” scams.

Now comes illegal movie downloads.

With the recent release of Bruno and the upcoming release of the latest Harry Potter installment, content pirates have taken to setting up Twitter accounts and pushing their pirated movie copies via Trending Topics tweets.

A Twitter search for Bruno produces the following search results:

Spam alone may be the prevailing reason why real time search hasn’t yet become ready for prime time.

Twitter Search Errors… Again

Twitter search appears to be taking a vacation this Memorial Day 2009:

TweetTrail.com Twitter Audience and Twitterer Segmentation

March 27, 2009

Organizing the Twitter audience will prove key for Twitter and its users to monetize their Tweets.

TweetTrail.com segments the Twitter Audience albeit through manual searches.

TweetTrail.com

TweetTrail.com

TweetTrail.com is a pretty cool tool.

Search for Twitter users by the frequency of Tweets containing your market related keywords to identify and follow potential leaders in your industry’s niche.

The following Tweet Trail search produces the top twenty Twitter users whose Tweets contained Adwords.

I am not sure how far back TweetTrail.com mines Tweet data for keywords.

Recently I have noticed Twitter has begun reducing the amount of search history available for some search terms.

I would guess Tweet Trails keyword histories are also constrained by the same parameters Twitter now imposes on Twitter search.

Twitter Search, Profile and Settings Now Visible @ Web Login

March 5, 2009

Today while logging into Twitter, I noticed my account now features the Twitter Search box in the upper right hand corner of the page.

Placing Twitter Search atop Twitter account pages makes using their search feature much more likely.

Searching Twitter before the search box required scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking Search or having to navigate directly to Twitter search in another browser window.

Having search on the same page will keep Twitter users on Twitter’s site.

Clicking on Search takes users to Twitter’s real time search box where Twitter users can “See what’s happening – right now.”

Searching Twitter produces a list of the 15 most recent “real time” Tweets containing the searched term.

Just to the left of the Search Now box, Twitter also provides a “Trends” drop down tool box.

Clicking on Trends takes account holders to a list of Twitter’s Top 10 most mentioned terms.

Click on any one of the terms to reach the real time stream of Tweets for any of Twitter’s Top 10 Trends.

Here Twitter also provides a list of Tweets containing the Trending term along with a list of Matching users and Featured users like it does on their “realtime results” page.

By providing Matching and Featured users Twitter gives its users a chance to explore topics they have already confirmed they have an interest in.

Twitter has also pushed links to both the account holder’s “Profile” and “Settings” to the Twitter users home page.

Name, Location, Web and Bio information are still found on the Twitter account holder’s public page.

By placing account related links on the “What are you doing” page, Twitter has reduced the number of clicks required to navigate Twitter account while also simplifying overall Twitter account management.

If the web continues to account for the majority of Twitter’s use as previously reported, surely adding search to every Twitter account will increase both Twitter’s use and usefulness further.

Finding Jobs on Twitter

February 26, 2009

Today while searching Twitter I discovered what was essentially a classified ad for a specific job.

Researching Twitter further, I found a variety of job offerings posted under generic searches for keywords including – jobs.

I stepped away from my computer for several hours this evening and upon returning I refreshed my browser where I found 1,364 posts had occurred with the keyword “jobs” in the Tweet.

An example of one of types of jobs I found on Twitter tonight was for an “Internship” at the White House.

TED: Live Blogging (Tweeting) By Some of The World’s Brightest People

February 4, 2009

Twelve years ago, I read an article about Richard Saul Wurman the co-founder of the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Conference and I have been intrigued with TED ever since.

The annual TED conference is happening now in Long Beach, CA.

This year a convergence of the latest technology and new communication habits provides a rare glimpse into conferences like TED.

In this case, attendees at the TED conference who are Twitter users are Tweeting their individual impression of what is being said on stage by TED presenters.

Searching Twitter for TED effectively reverse engineers TED’s Tweeting audience which in turn provides a rich source of innovative thinkers for – those who are interested – to follow on Twitter.

For instance, 297 Tweets related to the TED conference have occurred since I began writing this post.

Ted Tweets

Most Tweets pertained to Tim Berners-Lee who just suggested to the audience they share their raw data over the web.

Many TED attendees have since provided the link to Tim Berners-Lee’s TED presentation which is here.

Searching Twitter for TED will provide any searcher with their own list of some of the world’s brightest people.
