Hot news! Blog Content Theft

Content and Feed Theft of my WordPress Blog by a WordPress Blog

I wrote a post about Google Trends and the earthquake today in Illinois.

For some reason when I made my post, it took a while to get pulled into blog.search at Google. When it did however, it was under someone elses blog who had in turn stolen all of my headlines and content verbatim.

Blog Search

wordpress-content-theft

This just occurred today but it looks the blog is grabbing a bunch of feeds.

It hasn’t been unusual for me to see my content scraped and put on splogs but having them usurp my feed and place in blog search for it is an entirely different matter.

I feel your pain, but that’s a self-hosted blog and there is nothing wordpress.com can do about it. There are many, many forum threads about scrapers, splogs and DMCA and one or more of them might be of help.

  2. cohn Member April 18th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

I understand it is self hosted and that content theft is inevitable.

My concern is that it has somehow supplanted my feed into blog.search results – I mean they stole my content and got into blog search before the ink had dried on my post.

My question is about the status of wordpress feed. Has it not been compromised?

If I write a blog post about this topic, will it too be “authored”, scraped and indexed as someone other than its original author?

    Should I try it out?

  3. raincoaster Member April 18th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

No, the feed has not been “Compromised.” This is standard splogger behaviour: they subscribe to feeds, which go out instantly. And they’re automated, so their posts go up instantly. This is how it works.

  4. ellaella Member April 18th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

I might well be missing something — it’s been a long day — but your feed is available to anyone with a feed reader and theirs is available to the search engines. As for the swiftness, the other day I posted something on a political blog ( a .com blog not linked to my name here) and in the time it took to check the front page and make sure all was right I had three splogger pingbacks in my spam queue.

Sure, try it, why not? 🙂 I’ve done more devilish things to people who stole my entire content — including my copyright notices.

  5. cohn Member April 18th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

OK. Thank you both.It too has been a long day over here, I just learned I had another site receive an SQL Injection hack which has created a much longer list of problems to deal with.

As a result, I may not have communicated my thoughts as clearly as I had planned.

Raincoaster, I understand your explanation and I think it makes the most sense.

However, if the splog site has grabbed my content and is now being placed in Google blog results and now Google’s search results, I would argue my feed has been compromised because I am no longer being credited as the post’s author.

  6. Would you not agree?

Theft of content is one thing. Theft of its authorship is another.

  7. cohn Member April 18th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

In order to eliminate the feed as the source, I will write this post to see if the splog is grabbing my feed specifically or if it is grabbing keyword specific posts.

Only at that point, will it become clear what further options I may have.

My blog entry title will be: Hot news! Blog Content Theft
The contents of my post will be from this thread along with screen shots.

    Here it goes!

Seems for me, that the account of the website was hacked. I’ll send a complaint to the hoster, and contact the owner of the site tomorrow. In the upper right corner of the “blog”, there is an “ad”-banner, linking to a website with VERY bad behaviour.

You can find a report about the “bad” site here:

Google Earnings

April 17, 2008

Google continues to grow it earnings through search ad delivery domestically (20% over 1st 2007) while for the first time Google has generated the majority of its revenues (51%) from the international market.

“Our ongoing innovation in search, ads, and apps helped drive healthy growth globally across our product lines, yielding another strong quarter for Google,” said Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google. “As we integrate DoubleClick into our advertising platform, we see exciting new ways to improve the user experience and increase value for our advertisers and partners. Also, while exercising operational discipline, we continue to explore opportunities that add value to users everywhere and to Google in the long term.”

From the Google Earnings press release:

Google Paid Clicks – Aggregate paid clicks, which include clicks related to ads served on Google sites and the sites of our AdSense partners, increased approximately 20% over the first quarter of 2007 and approximately 4% over the fourth quarter of 2007.

Google International Revenues – Revenues from outside of the United States totaled $2.65 billion, representing 51% of total revenues in the first quarter of 2008, compared to 47% in the first quarter of 2007 and 48% in the fourth quarter of 2007.

That which is measured can be managed and as Google’s earnings illustrate, no company manages search ad delivery better than Google.

Audience Literacy Drives Major Newspaper Website Traffic

April 15, 2008

New visitor data from the major US newspaper publishers suggests their home market population density and overall audience literacy contribute significantly to their website traffic.

The larger their home market area and the more educated their audience, the more likely their web property will flourish.

The following are the top thirty newspapers online visitor traffic counts according to Nielsen.

  29. Detroit Free Press — 1,168
  30. The Washington Times — 1,161

Source: Nielsen (1/08); traffic in thousands

The NYTimes.com sitting atop the nations’ largest media market and with arguably the most educated audience in America, generates nearly ten times its paid off line circulation online.

USAToday.com’s off line circulation doesn’t appear to enjoy the same size online multiplier as the NYTimes.com and WashingtonPost.com do. Drawing its circulation from subscribers dissatisfied with their home market paper doesn’t necessarily translate into larger online readership.

The Washington Times with nearly ten times its off line circulation visiting its web property online confirms literate and dense populations contribute to each newspapers online audience and advertising potential.

MicroHoo Internet Yellow Pages Market Leader?

March 25, 2008

comScore has released its 2007 Internet Yellow Pages market share report showing YellowPages.com barely edging out SuperPages.com for the market leader position in the Internet Yellow Pages market.

The top eight Internet Yellow Pages (IYP) sites in the United States for 2007 and their market share were:

1. Yellowpages.com 20.2%

2. Superpages.com 20.0%

3. Yahoo Sites 17.9%

4. Google Sites 15.1%

5. Yellow Book Network 8.6%

6. Time Warner Network 6.1%

7. Microsoft Sites 4.8%

8. R. H. Donnelley 3.3%

Greg Sterling has also noted how YellowPages.com has entered into a new deal with Microsoft.

Something the comScore report didn’t point out is that by Microsoft acquiring Yahoo, Microhoo! will acquire a market leadership position in the Internet Yellow Pages market vaulting over both YellowPages.com and Superpages.com in one leap.

Provided the market share numbers don’t move much over the next several quarters, Microhoo will have a 22.7% share of the Internet Yellow Pages market.

By Microsoft switching to YellowPages.com, they are simply preparing to strengthen and flesh out their new market position in the Internet Yellow Pages market by further exploiting Yahoo’s existing relationship with AT&T and their ownership of Yellowpages.com
