Google Print Ads Still Active on Google’s Site

February 6, 2009

Today I was surprised to see the page promoting Google Print Ads still active on Google’s site.

Google Print Ads?

With Google’s newspaper advertising program coming to an end soon, you would think they would have some kind of “program closing” announcement in its place instead.

Not every one has got the memo…

Estimated Average Google Advertiser Annual Spend Per Hour

February 5, 2009

Google had $21.8 Billion in 2008 revenue 99% of which comes from advertising.

It been estimated Google has between 1.0 million and 1.5 million advertising clients worldwide.

With 1.5 million advertisers, Google’s average annual revenue per advertiser would be roughly $14,333.33.

Dividing $14,333.33 average annual spend by 365 days yields an average of $39.27 spent per day per advertiser.

This in turn suggests the average Google advertiser spends $1.64 per hour 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Google handles 8 Billion searches each month now or approximately 266,666,667 million searches a day.

By combining the previous figures with the average Google property visitor session length and page views couldn’t we then also extrapolate what percentage of advertisers ads are clicked on daily as well as what Google’s average income per click is?

I will have to do more research to see if I can come up with more solid numbers.

Include Your Twitter Address in YouTube Videos

February 3, 2009

Danny Sullivan tweeted his plans for placing his Twitter address on his business cards.

Great idea.

I too have been considering ways to cross promote some of my content from one platform to another.

His tweet prompted me to follow through with several ideas I have had for extending my Twitter account’s reach.

I have added my Twitter address to my Google Adwords Professional video on YouTube.

YouTube Twitter

To me, it seems only natural for YouTube producers to add their Twitter contact details to their videos.

I am surprised YouTube hasn’t yet added Twitter as one of their sharing options.

Share YouTube with Twitter

Its not an option on YouTube yet…

Surely adding Twitter to YouTube’s share options would help both properties further develop and deepen their respective shares audience attention.

Connecting YouTube’s  and Twitter’s audiences may provide further monetization opportunities as well.

Google Mayhem… er May Harm Your Computer

January 31, 2009

The StopBadware.org malware warnings Google has used to warn searchers of potential malware on websites mistakenly were displayed across nearly all Google search results early this morning.

Searchers found entire pages of Google search results filled with the malware warning “this site may harm your computer”.

The official Google Blog has already issued a statement:

What happened? Very simply, human error. Google flags search results with the message “This site may harm your computer” if the site is known to install malicious software in the background or otherwise surreptitiously. We do this to protect our users against visiting sites that could harm their computers. We maintain a list of such sites through both manual and automated methods. We work with a non-profit called StopBadware.org to come up with criteria for maintaining this list, and to provide simple processes for webmasters to remove their site from the list.

Fortunately for both Google and its users the “error” occurred early Saturday morning in the United States which historically is when search traffic reaches its lowest trough.

This particular Google error also achieved something I believe that until today was unprescedented:

The top four Google Blog search results within the Technology category were dominated by the Google malware story.

The majority of U.S. workers may have been beginning their weekend, but tech workers and bloggers were busy as usual pounding away on their keyboards about the 24/7 world of technology.

Google Maps Street View of Man with a Gun

January 30, 2009

The Smoking Gun has published a Google Maps Street View image of a man carrying a gun he had apparently just purchased.

The Smoking Gun doesn’t link directly to Google’s street image but does provide some clues as to where the image can be found.

It took me about three minutes to find this picture.

How long will it take for you to find the same public Google Maps Street View image of the man walking with a gun?

YouTube Now Considered A Google Adwords Search Partner?

January 19, 2009

Over the weekend I noticed some of my clients Google Adwords ads – not YouTube Sponsored Video ads – began displaying in YouTube search results.

I don’t recall seeing or selecting YouTube search as a distribution option in my Adwords dashboard.

However, I think distributing brand related keyword ads to YouTube search results is a logical evolution in both the Google Adwords text ad distribution platform and YouTube search.

According to comScore, if YouTube were to stand alone it would be the second largest searched site after Google itself.

Where will Adwords advertisers soon find YouTube as an ad distribution option in their Adwords account?

Will they find it under the Networks and Bidding options?

Or will we see it after learning about the Google Search Network?

Its not yet in the list of Google Search partners today but I it soon could be…

Unless of course, Google’s ownership of YouTube doesn’t technically require them to identify and disclose YouTube as a search partner.

I guess Google’s considering YouTube an extended part of Google search would still be technically correct.

Won’t we soon learn which path Google has chosen?

Google Quick Search Box for the Mac: qsb-mac

January 13, 2009

Has the lowly desktop become the final frontier for potential text ad display?

Google has launched an open source search box for the Mac that allows Mac users to search data on their computer and across the web.

From Google: “This app is very experimental, but through it you will be able to see many of the areas we are exploring: contextual search, actions, and extensibility. It is by no means feature-complete, but is a very good indication of things to come.”

Google Quick Search Box Features:

The Quick Search Box features states – “It works as a location bar AND a search box”….

I am not sure whether this means geographic and physical location or the location within the Mac?

Which is it?

2008 Q4 Google Results Prediction

January 11, 2009

My 2nd prediction for 2009 is that Google will post stronger than expected results for their 2008 4th quarter reporting period and Google will turn in their best quarter ever in Q4 2008.

I can’t wait to learn more about Google’s 2008 year end results.

Google 2009 Buying Spree?

January 8, 2009

From Google’s December 15, 2008 SEC filing via the Associated Press:

Although not necessarily in the “online advertising” industry and as I wrote before, I think Google will buy Twitter in 2009.
