Google Holiday Shopping Ads in March?

March 11, 2009

Today while in my Gmaill account I spotted an Adwords ad from Google for its holiday shopping products.

The Google Ad reads:

Tip from Google: Check out this seasons top gifts and save with exclusive discounts.

Apparently whoever was in charge of running this particular ad campaign for Google forgot to shut it down after the holiday shopping season ended – 60+ days ago.

Curious Gmail account holders who see this particular ad like I did will find the ad’s broken link routes them to a non-existent Google search results page.

As a rule, Google eventually finds ads with broken links and suspends the ad until the advertiser can fix or replace the faulty link.

I guess this hasn’t yet happened with this particular Google ad.

Google Innovations

February 28, 2009

David Pogue with The New York Times recently created a list of  innovations Google has produced or bought in its relatively short corporate history.

His list consists of Google products most any consumer who has been online in the last year would recognize including Google Earth, Gmail, YouTube and Blogger.

Some of the lesser known Google products and tools mentioned in Pogue’s New York Times article are: Google Docs, Picassa, iGoogle, Google Reader, Google Trends, Google Maps, Street View, Translator, 1-800-Goog411, Google SMS, Google Alerts and Google Sets.

Although the article begins by mentioning Google’s search box, Pogue doesn’t mention the greatest commercial result to come from Google’s search box by name: Google Adwords – arguably without which – none of Google’s other products would exist.

Maybe therein lies the keys to Google’s success.

Google Adwords Retiring Business Pages for Mobile Ads

February 16, 2009

Today while logged into my Adwords account, I received the following message stating Google will be shutting down their Adwords Business Pages for Mobile Ads.

From Google Adwords:

AdWords Business Pages for mobile ads are being retired. As the first stage, you will no longer be able to edit your mobile Business Page after March 23. Please make any necessary changes before that time.

For posterity’s sake, below is a redacted Adwords Business Pages for Mobile Ad:

While in my Adwords account, I clicked through to the Adwords Help Center to learn more about Google’s decision to retire this particular program but couldn’t find one.

My guess?

Adwords Business Pages for Mobile Ads is being retired due to low enrollment and use.

New Google Adwords Updated Interface Graph Option Metrics

February 12, 2009

I have been using the Google Adwords Updated Interface for several weeks now and have come to appreciate its speed and data display features.

I opened my first Adwords account March 5, 2002 and if I recall correctly I think the Updated Beta version – excluding the initial Adwords product and then the addition of the My Client Center dashboard –  is just Google’s second incarnation of their Adwords account interface.

New to this latest version of Google Adwords is Graph Options viewing of account data.

Adwords advertisers can view one or two of their campaign’s metrics from within their account under any of their campaign tabs.

Being able to drill down into an Adwords account and visualize data whether in ad groups, keywords, networks or ads saves both clicks and time.

With Graph Options Metrics buttons advertisers can see a combination of two sets of data at once.

The nine account performance metrics available within Google Adwords new Graph Options are:

Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Avg. CPC, Cost, Avg. position, Conversions, Cost/conv. and Conv. rate.

Google Adwords Beta: Latest Browsers Only

February 11, 2009

My trusty MacBook Pro hard disk drive failed and I have had to switch to an older box to try and work on while my hard disk drive gets replaced.

Its easy to forget just how far computers and browsers specifically have come in the last few years until you have to try to get any work done on an older machine!

Browser page load times take an eternity.

In the time it takes for one of these pages to load on this old box, I could have completed three other tasks on a newer machine.

Which brings me to the subject and point of this post: The new Adwords Updated Interface will not work with older browsers.

Should I now thank my Apple MacBook Pro for failing because it gave me this topic to cover?

I can still log into My Client Center in Google Adwords and access my clients’ data because my personal Adwords account was the only one to get the Adwords Beta Invite.

More from Google Adwords about use with older browsers:

The updated AdWords interface may not work properly in your web browser. We are working hard to add support for more browsers. Until then, please use Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 3, or Chrome to manage your campaigns. The updated AdWords interface may be slower on older versions of Firefox. For better results, we recommend upgrading to Firefox 3.

Indeed Google. Firefox’s Beta 3.1 worked fine just a few days ago when I was working on my MacBook Pro.

I bought my MacBook Pro to get and run all of the latest and greatest software.

Unfortunately, I didn’t upgrade this old PowerBook G4 which requires Mac OS 10.4 to run Firefox 3.

I have Mac OS 10.3.9.

New to Google Adwords: Low Share of Voice

February 8, 2009

Google Adwords will soon be rolling out a new status within Adwords accounts worldwide called “Low Share of Voice”.

Adwords advertisers who aren’t familiar with the advertising concept of  “Share of Voice” will be able to click on the question mark next to their alert to learn more about Google’s definition of Low Share of Voice.

However, my Updated Adwords Beta doesn’t yet include Google’s definition of Share of Voice or Low Share of Voice.

Estimated Average Google Advertiser Annual Spend Per Hour

February 5, 2009

Google had $21.8 Billion in 2008 revenue 99% of which comes from advertising.

It been estimated Google has between 1.0 million and 1.5 million advertising clients worldwide.

With 1.5 million advertisers, Google’s average annual revenue per advertiser would be roughly $14,333.33.

Dividing $14,333.33 average annual spend by 365 days yields an average of $39.27 spent per day per advertiser.

This in turn suggests the average Google advertiser spends $1.64 per hour 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Google handles 8 Billion searches each month now or approximately 266,666,667 million searches a day.

By combining the previous figures with the average Google property visitor session length and page views couldn’t we then also extrapolate what percentage of advertisers ads are clicked on daily as well as what Google’s average income per click is?

I will have to do more research to see if I can come up with more solid numbers.

YouTube Sponsored Video Ad Text Missing in Google Adwords Beta

February 2, 2009

Last week I received an invitation to participate in the Google Adwords Updated Interface Beta.

I hope to be able to provide Google constructive feedback on any usability issues I may find within their latest version of the Adwords account management system through blog posts like this one.

In December I launched a YouTube sponsored video ad campaign.

I ultimately found managing my sponsored video ads from My Client Center more convenient and efficient than managing them through my YouTube account.

After receiving the Beta invite, I started using the Updated Interface and immediately found the data within my account loaded much more quickly.

I am planning to test more of the new Interface features this week.

The first issue I have found doesn’t seem too significant.

Previously in my Adwords account, Sponsored Videos ads text was displayed at the ad group level.

However, my Sponsored Video Ad text doesn’t appear in the Google Adwords Updated Interface Beta .

The data field is there, yet the data isn’t.

When the page loads a quick “loading” message appears followed by the no ads text seen above.

Its a minor issue but an issue I suspect will eventually need attention.
