Google Editions: More Inventory For Google Adwords?

October 15, 2009

From the 61st Frankfurt Book Fair, the Associated Press reports Google plans to enter the eBook market with its new service Google Editions.

Clarifying their earlier announcements regarding Editions, Google will only offer books submitted and approved by the copyright holders.

The books bought through Google Editions can be read on any device with a web browser including smart phones, laptops, netbooks and personal computers.

Google plans to make their ebook inventory available through resellers while hosting the content on their servers to make the books searchable.

Ultimately Google plans to make books available from anywhere on any device.

Once Google Editions has been launched, look for Google Adwords to continue to appear in book searches like they do now at Google Books if not on the right rail of every page regardless of which device is being used to read the book.

A Small Market Perspective

Twitter’s advanced search features can be used to locate Tweets coming from Twitter accounts within a specific mile radius of a city or state.

As you can see from the results below, I still haven’t figured out how to use Twitter’s real time search to help generate prospects, leads or sales efficiently.

Maybe Twitter hasn’t figured out how to make money from their service because Twitter account holders haven’t yet figured out how to make money on Twitter either.  ( Of course this excludes the Twitterers selling “How to make money on Twitter” books and tapes…

Adwords Max CPC Bid Simulator

September 13, 2009

I noticed in one of my Google Adwords accounts, their new Max CPC Bid Simulator doesn’t provide data on every keyword in an Ad Group.

I asked several Adwords Experts if they knew whether this was until more history data became available within the account or whether the tool didn’t have network level data to draw upon.

Any ideas why the Adwords Max CPC Bid Simulator doesn’t provide data for each keyword in an Ad Group?

For some reason, My Client Center data isn’t linked to my original Google Adwords account which I created on March 5, 2002.

Google Adwords Questions: Where Do You Advertise and Sell?

August 23, 2009

I was setting up a new Google Adwords account today and found the following questions near the end of the account creation process.

Where do you most often advertise your products or services?

Where do you most often sell your products or services?

Where Do You Advertise and Sell Your Products?

Where Do You Advertise and Sell Your Products?

I guess Google Adwords is still adding new advertisers to its reported 1+ million Adwords account holders around the world.

It would be interesting to learn what percentage of their new accounts report advertising  adn selling their products exclusively offline.

Surely most small businesses are now aware they are being browsed online before their  phone ever rings or their door swings open.

Sample Adwords My Client Center User Interface and API Access Request

August 20, 2009

Anytime a Google Adwords Professional or Adwords Management firm begins the Adwords account management process, its highly likely they will initiate either User Interface or API access to manage the account – or both.

Google Adwords API Access and Management

Google Adwords API Access and Management

Once initiated, the Google Adwords account holder will receive a message like the one above in their Adwords account where they can either accept or reject the account management request.

Once the request is accepted, the Adwords account manager will then see the new account in their My Client Center along with all of the other accounts they manage.

Adding an account to the manager’s My Client Center lets an Adwords Professional manage all of their client’s accounts from a single User Interface – their My Client Center.

Google Adwords Online Marketing Challenge Metrics

July 24, 2009

Google has announced the winners of the 2009 Google Online Marketing Challenge – a global university competition that gives undergraduate and post-graduate students hands-on exposure to online marketing.

The team from Deakin University, Australia was the winner of the global competition.

When asked how their team constructed the winning campaign, team spokesperson Andrew Kidd shared the following insight:

After discussions with the business owners, we decided we needed to conduct three separate campaigns. One would promote the play center to customers outside a 10 kilometre geographic radius, another would attract more mothers’ groups to the center, and the third one would attract more party and group event bookings. Visitors to their website more than doubled compared with the same period last year. We knew we had developed a strong campaign — but to win the global competition is outstanding.

Google judged competitors entries by the following metrics:

A proprietary Adwords algorithm examined over 30 different variables within an account to determine the top 50 teams in each of three regions (The Americas, EMEA and APAC).

Expert Googlers reviewed these 150 accounts to determine the top 5 in each of the three regions.

A Global Academic Panel selected winners from these 15 teams based solely on the quality of a team’s written reports.

The Google Adwords campaign statistics algorithm rated the teams with five key metrics:

Adwords Account Structure – Did the team set up their Adwords campaign in an efficient manner? Was it structured against product/service lines and themes? Did it contain Ad Groups with relevant Ad texts/variations and keywords?

Adwords Optimization Techniques – Did the team take advantage of tools and methods to get the most out of their campaign? Did the team follow the best practice encouraged in the Challenge guides and Adwords support materials?

Adwords Account Activity & Reporting – Did the team review and change their approach over time to get the most from campaigns? Was the account regularly monitored and did the team check and iterate to the Adwords reports available?

Adwords Performance & Budget – How effectively did the team use the available daily budget across keywords throughout the competition?

Adwords Relevance – How relevant were the team’s Adwords ads what click-through-rates (CTR) were achieved?

Congratulations to the winners.
