Find People. Follow Them in Twitter…

January 17, 2009

It seems more often than not, the “find people’ search feature in Twitter has been disabled.

Such was the case again today.

This is one of several reasons why I think Twitter will ultimately be bought by Google.

Google can provide Twitter with both search and ultimately traffic monetization  –  two areas which presently appear to be Twitter’s most glaring weaknesses.

Borrowed and Blended Brand Images

I don’t know what to think of the following two brand images which appear strikingly similar to each other.

New York’s Hudson River US Airways Plane Crash on Twitter ✈

January 15, 2009

Twitter has got quite a jump on Google Trends vis-a-vis its near real time “reporting” of the events surrounding the US Airways plane crash out of New York’s LaGuardia airport into the Hudson River.

In fact Google Trends is still showing four hour old data which predates the plane crash and thus doesn’t include any searches for US Airways, New York’s LaGuardia let alone Hudson River, plane or crash.

On the other hand, Twitter’s “Trending Topics” which is Twitter’s version of the Zeitgeist  is topped by searches related to the Hudson River plane crash.

Twitter’s top searches at the moment include Hudson River, US Airways, New York’s Hudson and LaGuardia.

Searching Twitter’s Trending topics doesn’t require having a Twitter account and its a great tool for tapping into yet another level of public consciousness.

Coming Soon to YouTube: Fade To Black Option?

January 14, 2009

YouTube has announced a clever work around for video mixed with copyrighted music and uploaded to their site.

From the YouTube blog:

Previously, when a music label or other rights owner issued a copyright claim to block audio, the video was automatically taken down. Uploaders had two choices: dispute the claim or use our Audio Swap tool to replace the track with one from our library of pre-cleared music. Now we’ve added an additional choice. Instead of automatically removing the video from YouTube, users can choose to leave the video muted and live on the site, and many of them are taking that option.

Will YouTube videos with copyrighted content soon have a similar choice called the “fade to black”option?

Regardless of whether YouTube implements a fade to black option muting copyrighted audio ie., songs is a brilliant solution.

No harm, no foul.

However, I wonder how muting songs will affect YouTube’s “Download This Song” song sales links they place below videos mixed with copyrighted music?

Google Quick Search Box for the Mac: qsb-mac

January 13, 2009

Has the lowly desktop become the final frontier for potential text ad display?

Google has launched an open source search box for the Mac that allows Mac users to search data on their computer and across the web.

From Google: “This app is very experimental, but through it you will be able to see many of the areas we are exploring: contextual search, actions, and extensibility. It is by no means feature-complete, but is a very good indication of things to come.”

The Quick Search Box features states – “It works as a location bar AND a search box”….

I am not sure whether this means geographic and physical location or the location within the Mac?

Which is it?

2008 Q4 Google Results Prediction

January 11, 2009

My 2nd prediction for 2009 is that Google will post stronger than expected results for their 2008 4th quarter reporting period and Google will turn in their best quarter ever in Q4 2008.

I can’t wait to learn more about Google’s 2008 year end results.

Google Jet ✈

I was surprised to learn today while researching online that the purported corporate owner of the Google Jet ✈ has its legal representation here locally.

If I had to guess I would say this has something to do with the law firm’s avaiation practice.

Track Any Airplane Flight Online

January 9, 2009

Private airplane tracking services have come along way toward filling the gap that once existed between government and commercial airline data – and then some.

My curiosity about aircraft and their whereabouts peaked today after having seen five private jets all return to our local airport within one hour of each other.

I searched on Google for airplane tracking and found FlightAware.com.

FlightAware.com

I hadn’t yet seen an online flight tracking service quite like FlightAware.com.

If you know a commercial airline flight number or are curious about where your aircraft owner buddy has flown recently – just enter the flight or tail number (N-Number) into FlightAware.com to see the status and or location of the airplane.

If you don’t know the tail number you can search the public records for specific aircraft at the FAA by name, state or county or several other attributes.

Once you have the flight or tail number enter either into Flight Aware to track any airplane ✈…

Twitter Support in WordPress

January 8, 2009

WordPress is slowly integrating more Twitter related features into their blogging platform.

As of today there are 12 Twitter topics in WordPress support.

I expect the number of Twitter related support issues will grow significantly within WordPress throughout 2009.

An example of a recently added WordPress feature is the ability to subscribe to Twitter Streams in the WordPress dashboard.

Although its a bit time consuming to hand key in every Twitter stream a Twitter user follows-

the Readomatic feature may ultimately help both WordPress and Twitter users conserve their keystrokes.
