MashSpots.com: Find Any Business in Any City

January 22, 2009

MashSpots.com is the coolest and most functional Google Maps mashup I have seen yet.

Search for any business type in any city in the world  by entering the  “What” and “Where” into its search boxes.

Mashspots.com will then deliver the four closest results to the “Where” of your search.

Mashspots users can then click and drag the “Man” icon to a different location for a list of four new results.

In this screen shot, MashSpots.com accuately displays my business location and contact details.

Santa Search and Norad Santa Tracker

December 23, 2008

Searching for Santa?

Search no further than Google Earth this Christmas.

Google Earth Santa Tracker

Google Earth Santa Tracker

In anticipation of the 2008 Christmas Santa searching and tracking season, The Google Lat Long blog reviews Google’s history with NoradSanta.org and the evolution of Santa Search over the last several years.

NORAD – an acronym for North American Aerospace Defense Command – is a joint organization of two countries in North America – the United States and Canada that provides aerospace warning, air sovereignty and defense for North America except Mexico.

I am sure when it was founded in 1958, NORAD’s founders probably did not envision the day would come when the world would be filled with billions of interconnected computers and mobile phones whose owners could each track Santa’s location from the comfort of their home or car with a digital 3D map product called Google Earth… yet indeed today we can.

With Google providing the equivalent of a Santa Radar and a Santa Cam via desktop computers and mobile phones combined with Santa sighting commentary offered in six languages (German, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese) children and adults worldwide should be able to get all of their “Where is Santa?” questions answered on Christmas Eve December 24, 2008 unlike at any other time in history.

Traveling by air and not sure exactly where a particular airport is located?

From Google Maps:

To see exactly where any airport in the world is located, simply enter its three digit airport code into Google Maps .

Here is a sample Google Maps search for: LAX

Google Maps also provide international airport code lookups and satellite views of the airport where available.

Inputting an airport code into Google Maps to locate a final air travel destination should make planning ground transportation to and from the airport easier for both the inexperienced and experienced traveler.

Google Maps Street View of the White House

November 6, 2008

Washington D.C. now has Street View images available via Google Maps.

National landmarks including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln National Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial and even the White House are now visible from Google Maps Street View – albeit from afar.

To see your favorite national landmark, search for the landmark or its address in Google Maps and click street view.

Panning the camera angle will get the image and perspective you are looking for.

National security interests prevent vehicles equipped with cameras from getting to close to the White House, so this Google Street View from several blocks away will have to do.

However, pedestrians can still have their photo taken in front of the White House.

I was able to get this up close picture of the White House when I was in Washington D.C. earlier this year to give a search engine marketing presentation.

Interactive US Electoral College Map in Google Maps

November 4, 2008

MapMash has produced a pretty cool interactive US Electoral College map in Google Maps.

The MapMash map has eight different 2008 electoral college polls preloaded for comparing poll results from CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, USA Today, Pollster.com, Real Clear Politics, 270toWin.com and Politico.com

I don’t know when the polls were conducted but their results vary widely.

Reset the map from the “Submit Your Prediction” drop down box to generate your own personal prediction of the electoral college vote outcome.

Submarining Local Business Listings in Google Maps with User Content

November 2, 2008

After reading Danny Sullivan’s post about his and Mike Blumenthal’s continued frustration with Google’s Local Business Center and its shortcomings, I went to check the status of my recent attempts to further manage my business listing and its details in Google’s Local Business Center.

I was surprised to learn my listing edits were disapproved for reasons which weren’t fully explained other than through a pop up which said: “This listing does not comply with our policy of allowed terms.”

Policy of Allowed Terms

Policy of Allowed Terms

I haven’t yet been able to locate their policy of allowed terms.

Fortunately and because the Google Local Business Center still has room for improvement – my business listing can be found in a Google or Google Maps search for Advanced Marketing Consultants Nichols Hills, OK.

Google Local Business Center Overview

However, so can my competitor’s “listings”.

I was even more surprised to find information other than data directly related to my business inserted into both the Overview and User Content sections of my business listing by a “consultants directory” which effectively submarines my listing – not once but three times – all with the same “information” from the same “consultants directory”.

I am not sure these are the type of search results Google wanted to see occur when they opened up and allowed “user generated content” within Google Maps – yet these types of results are now appearing there.

How long will it take before every business category gets submarined by directories who spam Google Maps with their “Placemarks” on “Untitled Maps” under the auspices of “user content”?

Placemarks Untitled Maps

Placemarks Untitled Maps

I don’t know exactly how Google can stop spammers from generating “Placemarks” on “Untitled Maps” which in turn get published under unsuspecting business owner’s business listings.

Surely though since Google created the “User Content” system – they can also fix it.
